Action Alert on the Death Penalty in New Jersey

ON JANUARY 2ND, NEW JERSEY BECAME THE FIRST STATE ,VIA THE STATE APPOINTED DEATH PENALTY STUDY COMMISSSION , TO RECOMMEND THE END OF THE DEATH PENALTY! THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT WITH LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE, AND ALSO USING MONEY SAVED ,WITHOUT A DEATH PENALTY , FOR SUPPORTING VICTIMS' FAMILIES AND FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT. MOST OF YOU REMEMBER THAT IN 2004 THE NEW JERSEY LWV'ERS, AFTER STATEWIDE CONCENSUS MEETINGS CALLED FOR AN END TO THE DEATH PENALTY. NOW, UNTIL THE BILLS ARE SIGNED, WE NEED TO LET OUR LEGISLATORS KNOW HOW WE FEEL. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS URGING SPONSORSHIP AND SUPPORT FOR S 171 AND A 795.

Our League in Action

Our local action efforts are currently focused on:

• Providing input on environmental and affordable housing concerns as they relate to the Montclair Master Plan
• Developing an action plan to improve citizen participation in school board elections
• Encouraging all towns to implement recycling laws
• Establishing a moratorium on the death penalty
